You know how sometimes something comes right out of left field and whacks you right in the brain pan like a bolt of lightening and you are left sitting there shaking your head asking WTF??
Well, I recently had one of those moments.
It was over Farrah Fawcett of all things.
I think some talking head referred to her today as the “face of a generation.” That might be the best description of her yet. She was not really all that talented and for a large part of her life, she was “famous for being famous.” Sort of like a 1970’s Paris Hilton.
Yet for any of us growing up back then, you couldn’t help but notice her.

That face was everywhere. And what a face it was. I like to think of that period as sort of a transitional period. We were no longer a nation of idealistic hippies. Men were trading in their peace symbols for puca shell necklaces and women were finally shaving their armpits again.

Speaking strictly from a societal point of view, I think it was a good move.
To me, Farrah was one of those women who got better with age. By the time she was in her late 20’s or early 30’s, she was starting to take on that” Jacqueline Bissett older woman hotness.”

And her hair was considerably more tame.
So with each passing day the news gets more and more sad and the notion that she is not going to be around much longer is hard for me to swallow somehow. Her face defined a generation and with her passing, I just can’t help but feel a certain amount of sadness and loss. It’s just more proof that we’re all mortal I guess.
She just seems too beautiful to die. (Not safe for work.)
You’ll probably never hear another BeeGee’s song on this blog, so enjoy it while you can!
Oh, what wondrs she done fer Kleenex stock back in th ’70s!
Fairly nice lookin’ woman. (Oh, yeahhhhhhhhhh)
Wow, we both did the BeeGees tonight
Everyone’s too beautiful to die.
Right on, my brothers
Joey–I know I did my part.
Catalyst–Yes indeed.
Malach–Must be a Bee Gees kind of night.
Anaglyph–Yes, you are right. But how do you explain George Bush?
Cissy–Can you dig it?
I wonder if this is indicative of a shift in our attitudes about death (“oh Christ; here comes Chili with her philosophical shit again!”). I mean, really; we’ve been in such denial about death – our own or anyone else’s – that it’s a wonder we’re not all in therapy over it. This sort of thing – public figures tackling the issue in a public way – combined with the increase in things like hospice and palliative care make me think we might just be maturing enough as a species to recognize death for what it is; an unavoidable and necessary part of our life cycle….
Mrs. C–Of course I think you are right (but then again, I always do). I think with the impending deaths of people like Farrah and probably to another extent Patrick Swayze, all of us around that age are probably facing our own mortality.
I have been a little sensitive to this sort of thing since last year and have had a hard time even watching anything about Farrah’s illness. It’s funny to me though because other than her early 70’s hotness, I was never much of a huge fan of her until lately.
Yeah. I done my part too. Many times.
I wudnt about t do … yknow … anyone ELSEs part!
Yeah, even though the 70’s was full of all kinds of free love and stuff, you had to be careful. Some folks weren’t overly particular about where their free love came from!
I was more the Jaclyn Smith type but Farrah always held a simple sexiness that would drive me crazy. During the video (about the 1:20 mark) Farrah appears in a simple blouse and blues jeans but she has a smile that is more sexy than all her bathing suit pics.
Gotta agree. Of all th pics in th vid, twas th one o her in th bluejeans that done it fer mee too.
Beach–Yeah, I kind of liked Kate Jackson myself. I do agree with you though that she seemed to be the sexiest when she wasn’t trying to be.
Joey–She did a movie back in the late 80’s or early 90’s called Dalva based on one of Jim Harrison’s books. I thought she was incredibly sexy in that movie. The author of the book hated having her picked for that role though.
Oh sorry – I was only including people in that ‘everyone’.
Wow, those are some serious nipples.
I think the BeeGees will show up again. They are so near & dear to your heart.
Anaglyph–Yeah, Bush proves to be the exception to most rules regarding the living.
Chickie–Yes, she is well nippled, isn’t she?
C.Rag–Hi, and welcome to my blog!!! You are right. I think I am going to go on a Bee Gee’s fest now.
I couldn’t watch that special about her; I hate cancer.
I remember being very envious of her, to tell the honest truth.
HT/GT–I couldn’t watch it either. A few weeks ago when I had to go down to MD Anderson cancer center for my year check up, I realized then what a lucky human I am. Cancer is an insidious disease that once you have it, it is never gone. Even if you are cured of it, you live in fear of it for the rest of your life. Any reminders of it are just not needed.
I think everyone was very envious of her back then. She was so pretty and so “everywhere.” Hell, I think she might have been more popular than a pet rock.
I remember girls at school with those Farrah Fawcett flicked back side ‘bits’ on their hair. Big, huge, enormous hair. She was very pretty, and I’ll never be able to think of Charlie’s Angels without thinking of her. And her hair. x
We used to make fun of her hair- so much hair, so little talent!
Sharon Osborne had the same type of cancer, I think, & she seems to have beaten it, thus far.
I guess the most shocking thing, is Farah is ‘our’ age. Makes our motality too close for comfort.
I agree too, it seems surreal that we are probably about to lose Farrah AND Patrick Swayze. Cancer is a horrible horrible thing (of which I know you are all too well aware!)
aw, I didn’t know about Farrah. that time has come hasn’t it? seeing one’s contemporaries fall to the grim reaper…
Anothr thing about Farrah …
Givn th magnitude o her fame in th ’70s, and givn th oddness o her name, sheell always be THE Farrah. All othr Farrahs are, like, follow-up Farrahs.
Kinda like wit Elvis. Theres Elvis — THE Elvis — and then there are th OTHR Elvi. Elvis Costello, fer example.
Or Saddam. If I said, “Well, yer gonna hafta go ask Saddam about that,” you migt say, “Saddam? Hes dead, aint ee?” Imagine me sayin, “No. Greenwald. Saddam Greenwald. Go ask him.” Thatd be th OTHR Saddam, ya know?
Kitty–Yeah, here hair and her smile are what made her famous as far as I am concerned.
Meggie–Yeah, she wasn’t much on the talent department, but I think she did do a couple of dramatic roles later in life that were pretty good.
Patti–Yes, it surely does suck. Even if you beat it, you still live with it.
Rosie–Yes, sadly, that time has come. Farrah is a fighter, but I think she needs to let go now.
Joey–True, and much the same as you will always own the name Joey Polanski (whether it’s your real name or not!).
‘Joey Polanski’ is a pseudonym. My real name is too … ummm … … too … uhhh …
Hey, can I help it if Mama & Papa Polanski were big Presley fans?
Elvis Hussein?
Yep. Elvis Hussein Farrah Polanski.
Mr Stubb, seckon mate o th Pequod, once said:
I know not all that may be coming, but be it what it will, I’ll go it to laughing.
I hope theres a little Stubb in Ms Fawcett.
And in us all.
If I had but one regret, it would be that my little stub did not know Ms. Fawcett.
Yeah. I got a pretty sad Moby too.
There’s no such thing as a white “whale.” Guppy maybe, but it ain’t no whale.
I hear th Blue Whale is th biggest crittr that evr livd.
Whooda thunk Smurfs were so well-hung?
Works out well for me since I been hung like a Smurf my whole life!
Yeah, sad really. Her boobs have gotten bigger over time, it looks like by those pix, you wouldn’t happen to know anything about that now would you!?
Perhaps they are swollen from over-use?
Hm, I would never have thought of that!Cheers,
A
Amanda–I have a certain amount of experience in that regard!
She was one of the women that women and men loved equally… sexy without being trashy… back to when it was still beautiful to be kind and smart and sweet. I hope she goes peacefully. It warms my heart to see her man at her side still. I believe that is true love.
Sigh–Yes, she was simple and sexy, and I don’t mean simple in a bad way. A truly uncomplicated human being. Fact is, I admire her more today than I did back in the day. She’s a remarkable person.
